The Malteser Relief Service joins the project of the National Rehabilitation Centre “UNBROKEN” in Lviv to help Ukrainians who lost limbs during the war. Within the project, the Malteser Relief Service will equip a workshop for the manufacture of prostheses and train specialists in orthopedic technology abroad. The relevant memorandum of cooperation was signed today by the Malteser Relief Service, Lviv City Council, and the First Medical Association of Lviv. The amount of investment is 1 million euros.
The purpose of the cooperation is to quickly provide free prostheses and treatment for patients injured during the war. “Soon, a prosthetics department will be opened at the St. Panteleimon Hospital (formerly the Emergency Hospital) to help wounded Ukrainians who lost limbs during the war. This department will have two components: a room in the hospital where patients will be measured and imprinted, and a workshop where prostheses will be made. The workshop will be in a special mobile container manufactured by Ottobock, the world leader in prosthetics. It will be equipped with all the necessary modern equipment for the manufacture of prostheses,” says Pavlo Titko, head of the Malteser Relief Service.
The amount of investment is 1 million euros. The project will be implemented with the financial support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the initiative of the German Minister of Health.
“From the first days of the war, Malteser Relief Service launched a large-scale aid campaign for Ukraine. Today we are expanding our activities to help Ukrainians who lost limbs during the war. Due to the war and the destruction of medical infrastructure in many regions of Ukraine, today there is a need to increase the number of hospitals to provide quick and free treatment to these people,” says Janine Lietmeyer, Program Director of Malteser International.
In addition, thanks to the Malteser Relief Service, the staff of the future prosthetics department will be trained by the best orthopedic specialists in Germany.
“Many thanks to Malteser Relief Service for their cooperation. It was very supported by the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko. Thanks to the partnership, we will soon have greater opportunities for prosthetics and assistance to our wounded. Today there is the First territorial medical association of the city of Lviv, the area of which includes 180 thousand m2. These are very large areas, some of which have already been rebuilt. Every day we receive the wounded and provide them with assistance. Our task is to provide the whole cycle of relief: prosthetics, production of prostheses, all types of rehabilitation, and the opportunity for people to live and adapt to new conditions, having prostheses. We are talking about psychological, physical, and social rehabilitation. All this in complex together will be called the “Unbroken” rehabilitation ecosystem. Even when we opened a House of the Mother in Lviv, it became a part of the UNBROKEN ecosystem. Today we are taking another step,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
Recall that the rehabilitation center “UNBROKEN” will be the first center in Ukraine where physical, psychological, and social rehabilitation will be provided to 50 thousand Ukrainians annually. The patients will not only receive a prosthesis here but will also successfully return to a full life. It will be built on the territory of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
