The Maltese Relief Service held the “St. Nicholas for Children in Need” campaign for the 26th year in a row. In December, benefactors helped 2500 children in the Lviv region alone. We were most touched by a letter to St. Nicholas in which a child wrote that he did not want anything for himself, but dreamed of his mother’s sight being restored. And thanks to benefactors, the miracle came true!
In December, the Maltese Relief Service received 1500 letters from children in the Lviv region. Among them was a letter from little David. In a letter to St. Nicholas, the boy wrote that he wanted his mother to be able to see well. The benefactors who took this letter contacted the Maltese Relief Service and said they would like to help this family and fulfill David’s wish.
As it turned out, the boy’s mother Ivanna Moroz has congenital cataracts. Therefore, she has always had very poor eyesight. “David wrote a letter at school to St. Nicholas asking for surgery. He wanted his mom to see well. I didn’t even know about it, because we never talked about it. When the school principal called me, I burst into tears,” says Ivanna Moroz.
Victoriya Korinchuk, the coordinator of the “St. Nicholas for Children in Need” campaign, remembers the letter from David well. “This letter was very simply written. The child asked only for the necessities. He also was asking for his mother’s eyesight and health for all the children. And for himself, he asked for the most important things, such as clothes. That’s why this letter was so kind. It was sincerely written. And it was accepted literally in the first days when we started the campaign. The people who received this letter wrote to us the very next day to say that they wanted to help the family,” says Viktoriya Korinchuk.
Ms. Ivanna underwent surgery free of charge at the Dmytro Goryachev Ophthalmology Center in Lviv. “David’s mother has aphakia, the absence of a lens. Due to congenital cataracts, she had her lenses removed at the age of 8, but no intraocular lens was implanted. Ivana underwent lens suturing, and she can now see without glasses!” we were told in the clinic.
“This incredible story teaches us to believe in miracles because they do happen. We are grateful to all the benefactors for supporting our project and for the fact that the Miracle Worker heard and fulfilled children’s dreams,” said Victoriya Korinchuk, coordinator of the “St. Nicholas for Children in Need” campaign.
We remind you, in December, as part of the “St. Nicholas for Children in Need” campaign, the Maltese Relief Service in Lviv alone received 1,500 letters to the Miracle Worker from children living in boarding schools and orphanages in Lviv and the region, children form foster families, family-type orphanages, orphans, children with disabilities and children from families in difficult life circumstances. The donations received by the Maltese Relief Service allowed us to make gifts for another 1000 children from large families and children with disabilities.
